Can’t Get Tune Out of Your Head, Try Knocking It Out

I think I’ve stumbled upon a treatment for “earworms,” those tunes that get into your head and keep repeating until they drive you nuts.
I woke up in the middle of the night with an annoying song in my head. I don’t remember which, but it wouldn’t go away. And that’s when thinking of it as an earworm came in handy. In my half-asleep state, it occurred to me that perhaps it could be eaten by a bigger earworm.
So I applied my one functioning brain cell to thinking about the theme from the film Rocky (1976), Bill Conti’s “Gonna Fly Now.” Within seconds, the annoying tune was overwhelmed by the classic movie theme, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Sure, it’s still looping in my head the following day, but I can live with that. It’s more energetic, less annoying and a good accompaniment to any task I might undertake.
The the predatory earworm needn’t be from Rocky. I suspect the theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark would work equally well. So would other memorable movie themes. Or rock anthems. (Pretty much anything from the Jim Steinman/Meatloaf oeuvre.) Even the Toreador Song from the Bizet opera Carmen, aka The Bad News Bears theme.
Henceforth, whenever I am beset by an annoying earworm, I will identify a larger, predatory earworm to eat it. It may not solve the earworm phenomenon, but it seems like a pretty good workaround.
